The equipment is not usually the problem
Most of the complaints we are called out to are about air that is not arriving, not about equipment that has failed. That is a ductwork question, and it is measurable.
Symptoms
What the complaint usually is, and what it usually turns out to be
This is not a diagnosis. It is the pattern we see, and it is why we measure before quoting anything.
| What you notice | Often caused by | How we check it |
|---|---|---|
| One room never keeps up | An undersized or crushed branch, a closed damper, or a run added later without balancing | Airflow measured at that register and compared with the others |
| Upstairs is hot, downstairs is cold | A single zone trying to serve two very different loads, plus duct losses in a hot attic | Room-by-room airflow and a load calculation for each floor |
| The system runs constantly | Air being lost before it arrives, so the thermostat is never satisfied | Static pressure, plus a duct leakage check where it matters |
| Cold but clammy | Oversized equipment short-cycling, sometimes combined with poor return air | Run-time behaviour, return sizing, and a load calculation |
| A new system disappointed | A larger blower pushing through the same restricted ductwork | Static pressure against the equipment’s own rating |
| It is noisy | Velocity too high through an undersized return or a sharp transition | Static pressure and a look at the return path |
| Dusty, however often you clean | Return leakage pulling attic air into the system | Inspection of the return side and the plenum joints |
The table scrolls sideways on a narrow screen.
Measurement
What we actually measure
Four numbers, taken with instruments rather than opinions, and written down so they can be compared next time.
- Total external static pressureWhat the blower is working against. Compared with the figure the manufacturer rates that blower at. If it is well over, nothing else is going to behave.
- Airflow, room by roomAt the registers, so a complaint about one bedroom becomes a number rather than an argument.
- Temperature split across the coilChecked against the data plate. Outside its own range, the system is telling you something.
- Return path and sizingInspected. An undersized return is the single most common thing we find, and adding capacity upstream of it makes matters worse.
Honestly
What duct work will and will not do
| Claim | Our position |
|---|---|
| It will fix a room that never keeps up | Often — where the cause is airflow rather than heat gain through glass. We measure first so we know which it is. |
| It will reduce your running cost | Usually — air lost into an attic is paid for twice. We will not put a percentage on it before measuring your system. |
| It will let you fit a smaller system | Sometimes — and that is a real saving. It depends on the load calculation, not on the duct work alone. |
| It will fix a clammy house | Partly — if the system is also correctly sized. Oversized equipment stays clammy no matter how good the ducts are. |
| It will make the air healthier | Not our claim — that is a question for people qualified to answer it, and we are not going to sell equipment on it. |
| Duct cleaning is the same as duct sealing | No — they are different work with different purposes. If you want cleaning, ask for cleaning, and ask what it is expected to achieve. |
